Day One Is
Supposed To Be Day One

Nobody walks in knowing how to do this. The Foundation class exists because every good student in this academy started as a beginner who felt out of place for about twenty minutes.

You'll learn positions and escapes in a deliberate order, drill them with a partner, and train live only when you're ready. There is no requirement to be fit, flexible, young, or coordinated before you begin.

What you'll get in return is the most effective self-defense system available to a smaller person, conditioning you don't have to schedule separately, and a room full of people who are genuinely glad you showed up.

What Changes

The Part Nobody Tells You About

Students come in for self-defense or fitness. They stay for something they didn't have a word for on day one.

  • Composure Under Pressure

Learning to think clearly while someone is on top of you rewires how you handle everything less physical.

  • Conditioning You Keep

Strength, mobility and cardio earned through training you actually look forward to instead of endure.

  • Self-Defense That's Tested

Every technique gets pressure-tested live. You'll never wonder whether what you learned works.

  • A Room Full Of People

Training partners turn into the people who notice when you've been gone two weeks. That's the part that keeps you coming.

Straight Answers

Before You
Walk In

Still hesitating? Call the academy at (908) 578-2522 and ask.

I've never trained anything. Where do I start?

The Foundation / Beginner class. It exists specifically for people whose first day is today — Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:15 PM, Saturdays at 9:00 AM, and Sundays at 9:30 AM.

Do I need to be in shape first?

No, and waiting until you are is the most common reason people never start. You get in shape by training, and everyone here scales the effort to what their body can do that day.

What do I wear to my first class?

A t-shirt and shorts or leggings with no zippers or pockets. Bring water. We'll sort out a gi once you've decided to keep coming.

Am I too old for this?

We have students who started in their forties and fifties and are still training. Jiu Jitsu is built on leverage and timing, not explosiveness, which is exactly why it ages well.

Will I get hurt?

Training is controlled and supervised, and beginners drill far more than they spar. You tap, you reset, you learn something. That's the loop.

What is Open Mat?

Saturday 11:00 AM — unstructured training time where all levels roll together. It's optional, it's where a lot of the fastest progress happens, and nobody is keeping score.
