NAGA 2023Results

Our competition team represented Union at NAGA 2023 — here's what tournament day does for a student, and how we prepare for it.

Competition Team

Our competition team travelled to NAGA 2023 and did exactly what they've been drilling for all season — they competed hard, they represented the academy well, and a number of them came home with medals around their necks.

What Competition Actually Does For A Student

Nobody at Elijah Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is required to compete. Plenty of our best students never enter a tournament and get everything they came for out of regular training. But for the kids and adults who choose to test themselves, a competition day compresses about six months of learning into one afternoon.

  • You find out fast which techniques you actually own and which ones you only recognise.
  • You learn to perform while nervous — a skill that transfers to every exam, interview and hard conversation for the rest of your life.
  • You come back to the academy with a specific list of what to fix, instead of a vague sense that you should train more.

How We Prepare Competitors

Competition prep at our academy isn't a separate secret class. It's the same curriculum, sharpened: more live rounds, more situational drilling from the positions you're likely to hit, and a plan for making weight sensibly. Coach Elijah works with each competitor on a small number of positions they can rely on under pressure rather than a wide catalogue they half-know.

Thinking About Competing?

Tell Coach Elijah. There is no tryout and no minimum belt. If you're training consistently and you want to test yourself, we'll build the run-up with you — and if you'd rather never step on a tournament mat, that's completely fine too.
